(Bury Free Press) Archbishop of Canterbury speaks about same-sex marriage during Bury visit

The Archbishop of Canterbury has spoken frankly about the legalisation of same-sex marriage during the launch of the St Edmundsbury and Ipswich Diocese centenary celebrations in Bury.

Taking a question on the legislation which saw the first same-sex weddings in England and Wales held today, The Most Rev Justin Welby said: “Parliament has spoken very clearly and we accept that”

The head of the Church of England added: “The church does look very bad on this issue to many people in this country particularly younger people and we’re mugs if we think anything else. We need to be really blunt about that.”

The CofE regularly disagrees with various bits of legislation. I just wish there was some principle at work here beyond:

“The church does look very bad on this issue to many people in this country particularly younger people and we’re mugs if we think anything else. We need to be really blunt about that.”

Heaven forbid that the church should look bad. As Jesus himself said – go and make disciples of all nations, teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you – unless a Guardian editorial or the under 40 demographic mocks you, in which case change things up as you see fit.

It’s such a pathetic reason with which to justify anything important in human life – let alone piping down about the church’s teaching on marriage.

They have the NHS in the UK. Can’t the bishops get spines inserted on the taxpayers dime?
